Year 7 and Year 8gallery16.jpg

The Magdalen curriculum provides a logical and sequential pathway from the start of year 7 to the end of year 11 and then to the end of year 13.  Year 7 & 8 provide the foundation for future learning, ensuring students have the necessary skills and knowledge for the next stage of their learning. Details on the curriculum can be found in the links below for each Year group:

Transition to Key Stage 4

During spring of Year 8, students will be given the opportunity to explore their choices for GCSEs from a range of subjects.  Support is provided through a GCSE open evening, through an extended learning day, through 1:1 CIAGS (Careers information, advice and guidance) interviews with a member of staff, and through use of ‘START’, our web-based careers package.

All students in KS4 study English, Mathematics, Science, Games and RE; students then have 4 options:

  • 1 from: Triple Science, Computer Science, History, Geography, French, German
  • 3 from the complete list which includes the above, plus Sociology, Arts, Drama, Music, Physical Education, Design & Technology, Food Preparation & Nutrition, OCR National in Information Technology, and Business Studies

We want our students to choose a challenging and ambitious curriculum; GCSEs are not training for a job, they are part of a broad education to prepare for any opportunity.  Students are advised to study either History or Geography as these help make sense of the world; they should study a language, as these provide a different way of learning, a specific but transferable skill, and a different perspective on the world; they should study a creative / arts subject, again a different range of skills and knowledge.
