Our open evening is scheduled for Thursday, 22^nd January 2026, when applicants and parents / carers will have the opportunity to visit the school and speak with staff and students of individual subjects, as well as with the sixth form team.

Admissions criteria

Admissions criteria are in place to support students in making the correct choices for them.  At Magdalen, our criteria are:

• An average points score of 4 (APS of 4) across all GCSEs taken
• A GCSE grade 6 for subjects that have a higher tier, ie Mathematics, Languages, Biology, Chemistry, Physics [6/5 in GCSE Combined Sciences will be sufficient to study any individual Science A level]
• GCSE grade 4 in either Mathematics or an English; students will re-sit the other

Applications

Following receipt of students’ applications, option blocks will be created that ensure the majority of students can study their personal preferred combination of subjects.  Students are asked to choose 4x subjects in order of preference, and every endeavour will be taken to ensure that they can study 3 of these. If this does not prove possible within the created option blocks, we will contact each student individually to discuss their choices.
